The Obligations of Employers and the Rights of Employees

Issue 17, April 2008
The Obligations of Employers and the Rights of Employees

By Dr. Andonis Vassiliades.

In a series of papers on “Stress, stress at work, the law and litigation” in In Touch Magazine (cf. 2006, Issues 4, 5 and 6) we discussed various aspects regarding issues of employment and relations between employers and employees. We provided illustrative material of court cases and judgments reached. Out of those judgments we offered a set of 10 guidelines which if followed ought to ensure a good, caring, productive and healthy working environment (see in particular, Issue 6, pp.19-20).

Our dictum for good social relations in the workplace, which still applies, was phrased thus: a responsible employer, for responsible employees, by responsible employees, with responsible employees.
In this Issue, and the next, we return to matters of employment by focusing on the basic legal requirements and expectations placed on employers in meeting minimum provisions stipulated by law with regard to the employment of staff.
