Spring Migration Through Cape Greco

Now that spring can truly said to be here, this month’s suggestion of places to birdwatch in and around Larnaca moves to the east of the island – Cape Greco.

Cape Greco lies between the holiday resorts of Ayia Napa and Protaras, which are to the east of Larnaca. It is easy to find and is well signposted from both resorts. Although the tip itself is inaccessible, the parts that can be reached are very good for birds, as this part of Cyprus falls under a busy migration route between Africa and Europe/Asia.
Looking out to sea from the area during the spring can give views of migrating birds like herons and egrets as they fly around the coast line in small flocks heading for Turkey, Syria or even further north. Birds of these species may rest during the day on rocky outcrops or small inlets around the cape.
