Greater Love - Tales of Cyprus

By John Adams.

"Wish your brother was collecting your Uncle from the airport" I grumbled to Maria, my wife. "Can't we phone him and ask? The cloud is so heavy and low, it's obvious we are in for bad weather and you know how dodgy these mountain roads are!" Maria was already in the car, ready and waiting. "Don't be ridiculous, he lives in Agros, we are so much closer and besides, Uncle is expecting us."

I know when I'm beaten so I got in the car, but it wouldn't start! It was a lovely vintage car, my pride and joy, but it did give me the occasional problem. Like now! Didn't I catch it off Maria! She'd always been against me having a vintage car. "Why can't we have a nice modern car like our neighbours?" was a regular gripe of hers. Now she really let rip!
I laughed, I love the fiery volatile nature of Cypriot ladies. Of course laughing made it worse. She even complained that the delay might make us late to meet Uncle! Since when has a Cypriot ever worried about being late?
It took half an hour to get the car going so we were running a bit late. Meeting her father's brother was an important event. He had settled in Australia and this was his first trip back home. He was Maria's father's twin and had taken it very hard when a dreadful road accident killed both of Maria's parents. In fact, he was inconsolable, blamed the accident on Cyprus and within a month had sold up and moved permanently to Australia.
