October and at last some cooler weather, relatively speaking, as temperatures can still be in the high 20oCs. The days are fresher and you may well feel like getting down to some serious gardening again. It certainly is the time for it.

If your vegetable patch has been resting since July then you should be digging in some of that compost you have been making to enrich the soil again. All the worms will have slid down to cooler areas in the ground during the summer and need enticing upwards again with some good compost which they will turn into the soil for you. Try not to use chemical fertilisers on anything you intend to eat – always use compost if you can. If you haven’t any compost then try digging in some bags of potting compost – it will certainly help, especially if it is damp.
