skills from art in action. Being fascinated and moved by the beauty and natural grace of an animal, whether your own pet or a creature of the wild, is a pleasure which many of us share. It can truly be inspiring and a lot of people feel compelled to try and capture that special moment, the cuteness, the poise or the elegance of a seemingly perfect creature onto a sheet of paper or canvas.

If you have ever felt the urge but didn’t quite know how to start, a great way to begin would be by simply doing some sketching. Buy a small sketchpad and pencil and take it with you everywhere. You can practise sketching in the garden, the park, waiting for a bus and many other places. Don’t be put off if you are not happy with your results. You are not aiming for a finished drawing but simply a quick impression of what you see. You may just get to draw an outline and suddenly your subject moves or worse, has fled the scene; it doesn’t matter, simply start again on another page. You will find that your pet has its favourite positions and quite often simply returns to a familiar pose for you to carry on practising.
