A day with a football legend, Kenny Dalglish

By Tricia Willis.

As football fanatics island-wide anticipate the start of EURO 2008 in June, Cyprus has already been the host for one of the most exciting pre-tournament seminars. Moreover with Cyprus and England both failing to qualify, the event’s star guest - Kenny Dalglish MBE - provided guests and media with the unique opportunity to participate in a debate with one of the most revered player/managers in the football world.

Born on the 4th March 1951 in Glasgow, Dalglish became a huge success with Celtic in the 1970s. In 1977, having transferred to Liverpool Football Club for a record fee of £440,000, he became the most feared striker in the world. He was simply unstoppable both domestically and in Europe and is the only man to be crowned ‘King’ by the club. Indeed his Liverpool status is legendary with 515 appearances (307 as Captain), 172 goals, 8 League Championships, 2 FA Cups, 3 European Cups, 4 League Cups, 1 European Super Cup, 5 Charity Shields, 1 Football Writers` Footballer of the Year award (awarded in that year by Pelé), 1 PFA player of the year award and 3 Manager of the Year awards. Dalglish played for Scotland in the FIFA World Cups of 1974, 1978 and 1982 and is still Scotland’s most highly capped player (with over 100 appearances) and holds its goal-scoring record.
